Cap Ailleurs

Data sources and licences

Cap Ailleurs does not invent places. Every listing states its source. Here are our sources, how we use them and how to freely obtain the database we derive from OpenStreetMap.

How we credit our sources

Credits, methods and licences are collected on this page. Basemaps display their credits, then group them in the map’s information button. A commercial relationship (partner, affiliate) remains disclosed on the relevant item.

The basemap

Vector tiles are provided by OpenFreeMap, based on data from © OpenStreetMap and the schema © OpenMapTiles. Cap Ailleurs adapts the basemap’s colours and display.

Schema and design: © 2024 MapTiler.com and OpenMapTiles contributors. The design is licensed under CC BY 4.0 ; the code is under BSD 3-Clause. The original licences and notices remain available. OpenStreetMap data is licensed under ODbL.

Preparing arrival and the first night

The check uses times and durations entered by the traveller or agency. It does not measure traffic, airport queues, flight delays or road conditions. The initial allowances of 120 minutes before leaving the airport and 45 minutes for the road are adjustable planning assumptions, not observed or guaranteed durations.

Cap Ailleurs flags long flights followed by long transfers, late-day journeys, tight allowances and arrivals at night or the following day. The 17:00 to 06:00 window is a cautionary reference; no sunset time is calculated. The first accommodation is the first stop with at least one night.

A first night with a short transfer of around 30 minutes is a planning goal, not a safety certification or hotel ranking. Access, transport and reception must be confirmed with the professionals concerned. An agency’s explanation documents its choice; it does not replace that check.

References consulted on 13 October 2026: MOPT: driving at night, Official advice on road conditions in Costa Rica and ICT: preparing transport and accommodation. The check’s thresholds are Cap Ailleurs’ own, not official standards.

OpenStreetMap, the places database

Restaurants, accommodation, beaches, waterfalls, pharmacies, schools and other places shown in Cap Ailleurs come fromOpenStreetMap, an open mapping database maintained by its contributors, using the Costa Rica extract published by Geofabrik.

Licence: Open Database License 1.0. © OpenStreetMap contributors. Cap Ailleurs has not checked these places in person: a listing from OpenStreetMap bears “© OpenStreetMap”, never “Verified”.

What we do with the data

  • classify it in our categories, using rules published with the database;
  • assign provinces, cantons and districts (OpenStreetMap boundaries);
  • format phone numbers and websites; personal contact details for individually practising regulated professionals are not copied;
  • calculate completeness and confidence scores using only OpenStreetMap data;
  • merge duplicates within OpenStreetMap (the same place entered twice);
  • publish factual corrections reported by an establishment or member with the database;
  • for Travel: identify the settlement containing each stop and places within 30 km of each stop (waterfalls, hot springs, volcanoes, beaches), which support some of its interests.

Download the derived database (ODbL offer)

Under article 4.6 of the ODbL, we make the machine-readable database files for “Cap Ailleurs, OpenStreetMap Places in Costa Rica” freely available to everyone, whether or not they are members, under ODbL 1.0. Geographic corrections published after generation are available separately in the change log.

Geographic correction log of 10 October 2026 : reference removals, categories, positions and arrival information. No contact details or member data.

Version des fichiers de base : September 30, 2026 · 51 240 lieux (50 464 publiés à cette date)

This database does not include our editorial copy, partner offers, institutional data or member data. These form independent databases not subject to the ODbL.

Currency conversion

BCCR rates for the colón and ECB rates for the euro, Canadian dollar and Swiss franc, provided by Frankfurter. The US dollar is used as an intermediate currency in calculations. The result is indicative and excludes exchange-service or bank fees.

Dates may differ between currencies. The converter displays the oldest date used; rates more than seven days old are no longer used. The latest public rates stay on the device so conversion can continue during an outage while the page remains open. A connection is needed to reopen it.

Guidance: help and starting a business

The pages Need help, Starting a business in Costa Rica and French-speaking resources summarise, in our own words, the official websites of the organisations cited, read on 27 September 2026 without making calls or submitting forms. Each listing links to its source page and states its next review date. None of the cited organisations is a Cap Ailleurs partner, and no directory is imported in bulk.
